About this Book

Usan-Usan was a young farmer. He had a small paddy field that he tended all by himself. One day a large sparrow appeared and asked him for some grains of paddy. Usan-Usan was a kind young man so he fed the sparrow. Then the sparrow flew away with Usan-Usan following it. Where is it taking him? Jainal Amambing used gouache on paper for the illustrations in this book. The illustrations show the agricultural community that Jainal comes from - Sabah, on the island of Borneo. This book won the Second Prize in the Noma Concours for Picture Book Illustrations organised by the Asia-Pacific Cultural Centre for UNESCO in Tokyo.
